Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo Review

Does the Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo Deliver?

For the seasoned turkey hunter, calling and visual attraction are paramount, and the Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo promises to elevate both. This pairing combines the realistic presence of a jake and a hen, designed with enhanced fabric for natural iridescence and taxidermy-quality eyes. My search for more lifelike and versatile decoys led me to this combo, hoping it would resolve the issue of wary gobblers that have grown accustomed to more basic visual stimuli. My initial impression is one of robust construction; the fabric feels durable, and the visual details are indeed striking, far surpassing standard printed decoys. While I considered simpler, single-decoy options, the comprehensive nature of a pair for creating realistic social dynamics felt more compelling. The immediate feeling upon handling them is a sense of well-founded optimism for the upcoming season.

Real-World Testing: Putting Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial tests were conducted in a local wildlife management area during the pre-season scouting period, allowing me to observe reactions without the pressure of a hunt. I set up the decoys in a simulated strutting and feeding posture, aiming for natural movement and interaction. The decoys performed admirably in moderate winds, maintaining their shape and presence; they also stood up well to a light morning dew without any adverse effects. Deployment was straightforward, with the included carry pouches allowing for quick setup once I reached my intended location. No significant issues arose on first use, though understanding the full range of posing options required a bit of experimentation in the field.

Extended Use & Reliability

Over several weeks of scouting and eventual hunting trips, the PurrFect Pair XD Combo has proven its worth. The decoys have weathered multiple outings, encountering varied conditions including direct sun, light rain, and the inevitable brushes with undergrowth, all without showing significant wear. The fabric has maintained its vibrant, iridescent quality, and the taxidermy eyes remain firmly in place, which is crucial for realism. Storage is simple; they fold down easily into their zippered pouches and take up minimal space in my gear bag, making transport between hunting spots effortless. Compared to previous, flatter fabric decoys I’ve used, these offer a vastly superior 3D presence that has demonstrably increased gobbler interest.

Breaking Down the Features of Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo

Specifications

The Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo includes two distinct decoys: a Jake and a Hen, each designed for maximum realism. Each decoy weighs approximately 22 oz, a manageable weight for carrying into the field. When folded for transport, they pack down to a compact 9″ x 3″. Once unfolded, they stand impressively tall at 9″ x 34″, providing a substantial visual profile for wary gobblers. The improved fabric is a key specification, engineered to better replicate a turkey’s natural iridescence, a detail that significantly enhances their lifelike appearance.

Each decoy comes equipped with a zippered carry pouch, facilitating easy transport and rapid deployment. This thoughtful addition ensures the decoys are protected when not in use and can be quickly retrieved and set up when a hunting opportunity arises. The inclusion of taxidermy eyes adds a critical element of realism, a detail often overlooked in lesser decoys but vital for fooling mature birds. The ability to pose each decoy in several different positions is another significant specification, allowing hunters to create highly dynamic and convincing turkey set-ups.

Performance & Functionality

The primary job of these decoys is to attract gobblers, and in this regard, the PurrFect Pair XD Combo excels. The combination of the jake and hen, coupled with their realistic appearance and poseability, creates a natural scenario that frequently draws curious and sometimes aggressive responses from toms. The iridescent fabric catches the light in a way that closely mimics natural turkey plumage, making them visible from a distance and highly convincing up close. A notable strength is the variety of poses achievable; being able to position the hen in a receptive or feeding stance while the jake displays dominance or courtship behavior creates a powerful visual tableau.

However, a minor weakness can be the sheer realism of the jake, which in some instances might be perceived as too aggressive by very dominant gobblers, potentially causing them to hang back rather than commit. This is not a fault of the product itself, but rather something hunters need to consider when arranging their decoy spread. Overall, these decoys not only meet but often exceed expectations, providing a significant advantage in drawing birds within range due to their superior visual appeal and versatile setup options.

Design & Ergonomics

The build quality of the Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo is immediately apparent. The fabric is a durable, high-quality material that feels substantial and promises longevity, unlike flimsy, printed alternatives. The taxidermy eyes are securely set, adding a level of detail that brings the decoys to life. Ergonomically, the design is focused on practicality for the hunter; the ease of folding and packing into their respective pouches is a major plus. The lightweight nature of each unit, despite their impressive unfolded size, makes carrying them into tough hunting spots manageable.

The design ingenuity extends to the poseability. While they don’t have complex articulated joints, the fabric is supple enough to be bent and shaped into various natural stances, from upright alert to feeding postures. Markings are minimal, as expected, with the focus being on the overall visual impression. The lack of complex controls or mechanisms contributes to their ease of use and reliability in the field, with the only “control” being the hunter’s ability to position them effectively.

Durability & Maintenance

Under normal hunting conditions, the Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo is built to last for multiple seasons. The fabric has shown remarkable resilience against minor abrasions from branches and the ground. There have been no signs of cracking, stiffness, or degradation of the material even after being exposed to varying outdoor temperatures. Cleaning is simple: a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt or debris, and they can be air-dried quickly. The primary maintenance concern would be ensuring they are fully dry before storing them in their pouches to prevent any potential mildew, though the material seems quite resistant.

Comparing them to previous disposable or less robust decoys, these offer a significantly higher durability factor, justifying their price point for serious hunters. I have yet to encounter any failure points; the construction feels solid, and the key components like the eyes and fabric integrity have held up exceptionally well.

Accessories and Customization Options

The Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo comes with its own essential accessories: two zippered carry pouches. These are not merely bags but well-constructed carriers that protect the decoys and make transport convenient. Beyond the included pouches, customization primarily lies in how the hunter chooses to pose each decoy. While there are no specific aftermarket parts or modifications for these decoys themselves, their compatibility with standard decoy stakes or anchoring systems (often sold separately) allows for further positional adjustments and stability in windy conditions. The realism of the decoys themselves means they don’t require additional “accessories” to improve their appearance; their inherent design is their strong suit.

Pros and Cons of Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo

Who Should Buy Montana Decoy Co. PurrFect Pair XD Turkey Combo?

This decoy combo is an excellent choice for dedicated turkey hunters who prioritize realism and have encountered skittish gobblers. It’s ideal for those who understand the importance of visual cues in a turkey setup and want to create the most convincing scenarios possible. Hunters who frequently move between different hunting spots or travel to new areas will appreciate the portability and ease of deployment. Individuals seeking to upgrade from basic, flat decoys to a more three-dimensional and lifelike representation would benefit greatly.

Those who are on a very tight budget or are new to turkey hunting and looking for the absolute most economical option might want to consider simpler decoys first. Additionally, hunters who only pursue turkeys during specific mating seasons where a lone hen or jake might be more effective than a pair might also find this specific combo less ideal. For anyone else serious about adding a powerful tool to their turkey hunting arsenal, this combo is a strong contender.
